Sounds strange from someone that grew up in a Machine shop.
What I am looking for is someone that has taken a micrometer apart!
How do you get the mike part out of the "C" shell?
I want to try to make a micrometer seater for a Lee seating die.
The ones for sale are 9/16" 18 thread and the Lee dies are 5/8" 11 thread so I need to make one from scratch but have never taken a micrometer completely apart and need the complete stem to make the seater.
So no one gets offended I was going to use a 12 dollar 0-1 Harbor freight mike to make the seater instead of one of my good sterrit mikes.

Re: Micrometer help
What exactly is your question?
I've taken apart my dad's micrometer when I was a kid. I just turned the handle until it feel out. It assembled the same way.
Maybe you've got a picture of the one you want to take apart?

Re: Micrometer help
I can take the shaft and knob out by as you say just unscrewing the handle.
What I need to take off of the "C" frame is the barrel(lower half with the markings).
In other words have a complete micrometer without the "C" frame.

Re: Micrometer help
Found this. not sure it will help. And not sure what the HF one looks like. But from pics I was looking at, and what I recall of mine... Looks like the mic markings are on a piece that is attached to the top of the C. But I don't know if you can separate the mic body with markings from the C...

Re: Micrometer help
Oh, now I understand, my mistake. I've never taken that out.
Well, I guess these are pressed in and are not meant to be disassembled. Of it was a cheap tool, try pushing it out with an arbor press or some light taps with a rubber mallet an a piece of wood.
An extreme solution would be to cut it off...

Re: Micrometer help
Some of this inexpensive stuff is not even machined to that tight of press fit tolerance, just assembled with a adhesive. try heat and see if you might get things to start moving. Just a thought for what it's worth.
