For me it's the 44-40. It works from revolvers, rifles, with blackpowder and smokeless, and is a true classic. It's not really usable for hunting (prohibited here in Germany, but I think a lot of deer didn't care in the old days).

The first cartridge I ever reloaded some 48 years ago was the 44/40. The first thing you learn with that thin walled case is to make sure it's centered or the result was a crushed case. Several Axis deer and wild pigs were served on our table as result of that old Mod 92 44/40. ;)

I'm really torn here . I've recently come to really like the 45 Colts and the 357 having revolvers and carbines for both. The 7mm family has always had my attention the 7x57 and 280 Rem top that list though the mags never held any interest at all. Nearly all the bullet weight choices of the 30s higher BCs and all but the same MV weight for weight. I have a wildcat 7mm on the 6.8 Rem case 7x57 and a 7mm 06' that is more like a 7x64 Brenkke AI.

I guess I'll go w/7 x57 for rifles.

One ! Just one....I would have to say 38 special. This is about reloading so I'm not going into 22 LR territory. My reason is I have a Model 64 S&W in 38 spcl set up with a Millet SP-1 red dot sight. Now that I'm getting towards 65 , I can't see iron sights like I used too. So this set up at least lets me hit the target. Being half blind wasn't going to stop the fun. I must have about 6 different 38 cal. moulds and this keeps me busy, casting and working up new loads to try.
The more I shoot this setup the more I am impressed with the inherent accuracy of the good old 38 special.

I like a lot of different calibers but the one that "speaks to me" there is just something I cant put in words would be the venerable .45-70.
