Ok now for the big question...... In the picture of the 5 cartridges below, is the round in the center annealed ok? And the big question, are any of them anealed ok?

Would really apreciate feedback before I ruin all my cases.

Thanks,
Steve

The best way to get your process down keep notes of that process. Test shoot them look for splits an stress, if they hold up better then good to go. Some brass in mil. Spec cases Ive played with were brittle regardless what I tried. They do look good. Keep us posted.

How do you anneal?

I only reload handgun ammo, but a friend told me how he would find out if the case is annealed OK. He holds the case in his bare hand, turning the mouth in the flame, and as soon add it gets uncomfortably hot, he drops it into a bucket of water. He's satisfied with this method.

Others put the cases mouth up in a pan filled with water just below the shoulder, and guess the time, tipping the cases after they think it was enough.

Be careful not to make the brass too soft. If it glows, it was too hot.

They look great and are annealed correctly Steve.
Just remember the process you used and make sure to repeat it each time.
I'll bet they shoot just fine now and no split necks!

I've tried all the versions for brass w/a neck I chase th color line to just past the shoulder/body line cooling the cases is choice really but does become more important w/shorter cases. For example I just don't worry about it w/7mm mag or 300 WM or any of the 06' family . I don't worry about the x57 clan but if I'm forming say 8x57 to 257Roberts or 6mm Rem I would stand them in a pan w/1/2'' or 1 cm of water ''just in case''. The 308 family gets the line down to the neck/shoulder line and into a bucket ,at the same time the 30-30 s get the pan even if they are getting formed from 32 to 7-30 the brass is lighter and intended for lower pressures. When I get into the x39 ,223 etc the water pan and tip become the rule because of both pressures and case mass .I've done 223 and had the case anneal line half way down the body even though they were only done on the neck. That was a 1st time trial for reforming to 222,form then anneal ,trim, fire form. I've done a few 100 38/357 and 45 Colts those I pan stand and let cool , I heat them to color just the mouth rim about an 1/8'' or 2-3mm . Why is because at the moment Colts are unobtainable and $.60/case when they can be aquired. I think as long as the web and head don't get over 300* F the brass isn't hurt .

I have some HPX brass that when formed to 280AI from 30-06' is just really hard on the necks . The necks jump from 284 to 296 every firing so it splits necks every 4th cycle I'm getting 7-8 cycles annealing every other time.

I'm starting to think it's going to be part of the hobby for me. I'm enjoying spending the time, and it's another way to improve my reloads.
