Greetings from DFW Texas

Post by iLR60Mac »

I am new to reloading. I just mounted my new Lee Reloader on my bench yesterday. I still need .40 die, powder, bullets, and cases to get started. I'll bug you all with many questions in the future.

Welcome from West Virginia. Don't worry about being a newbie I just started last year reloading and casting. Had to cast my own because you couldn't buy bullets for love or money. Now you can find them most anywhere some of the time anyways. Powders and primers not so much.

First question. For tumbling brass, can I use a regular rock tumbler? Or, is this not advisable since it does not vibrate as while it tumbles?

Actually wet tumbling gives best results. Rock tumblers are just fine, like the thumlers tumbler or the ones from Lortone. But the media used for rock tumbling is not good for cases. Check out http://www.stainlesstumblingmedia.com there you can get the stainless steel pins used for wet case tumbling. Of you deprime before tumbling, even the primer pockets will look like new. It more quiet and faster than dry vibration tumbling.

You'll need some cleaning liquids also, but that is going into semi religious arguments regularly, similar to the best bullet lube ;-) . most people use just a little bit of citric acid or lemi shine and a drop of regular dish washing liquid. I prefer phosphorous acid, because it doesn't dissolve the zinc from the brass. But anyway you need the acid for shine, not cleaning, so you'll only use a very small amount.
