Wasn't sure if this was the place to put this so, RD, move if need be. I have somehow ended up with a pound of IMR4831 and I have a questions - what cartridge is it good for?

Good in a lot of calibers. 270, 25-06, 30-06 (I use it for 180"s) 7mag (140's) it is a bit slow for some applications (slower than the 4350's for instance) which I prefer for 150-165's in the 06. I also may have loaded up some 170's in my 308 Marlin Express using it but I'd have to go look to make sure. It's a good powder for the medium mag cases as well. May not be the fastest in velocity but generally will give good accuracy which is the name of the game, within reason of course. Good powder.

Thanks, guys I also looked through the 2020 Hodgdon annual and figure I can use it in my 6.5/06 and in the 6.5x55.

Have looked at this before for 6.5x55 Swede. From Quickload analysis it looks like a good choice with respect to powder burn, pressure and velocity as well as case fill. I have too much powder on hand just now but would be interested in your results.

H4831 which DuPont copied after WWII for the IMR lines was for the 20mm canon . It's right at the too slow cusp for 30-06' . Dad burned a lot of both in his 25-06' and I think it was what we tried in a Chilean 98' . I didn't have any as 4350 did what I needed to do . With his stuff added to mine I have 4-5# now . I'll be trying it in 257 Roberts .

I'll let you know. My 6.5s are currently limited to the Swedish collection and the 6.5x06. I have some varmit weight 6.5 bullets on the way. Other than punching paper, ground hogs and coyotes are about all I use them for.

IMR4831 is my "go to" powder in the .243; and works well in the 6.5X55, .270Win, 7Mag, and 30/06, as stated. It does burn faster than the Hodgdon's H4831 and is slower than IMR4350, but not by much. My experience has been that it seems very stable and not prone to pressure "spikes" when approaching max charges. Like most powders within its burn rate, it is not a powder you want to use for reduced powder loads unless you are into .416Rigby size cases or a fan of Elmer Keith's "duplex" loads. If I had too, I could live with IMR4831 as my slow powder, IMR4064 as my medium, and Unique as my "fast" to cover 95 percent of my loading chores. (What fun would that be when you have so many new propellants on the market promising lower pressure and higher velocities to experiment with?)
