Nice rifle!

The Garand is on my longlist, too.

When was it made?

This one was made in 54. The serial number series was a completion of a WW 2 contract with International Harvester. The manufacture of more M1 rifles was started up do to the Korean War.

I have a Korean War era design bayonet for it. The bayonet was made in 1962 in (Norway I think). The bayonet is shorter than the WW 2 design and has a larger release button on it to make it easier to operate with mittens on. That was because of the bitter cold they had in Korea when the war started.

December 14/1989 I requested this rifle from the Department Of The Army, office of Director Of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM). I received the rifle in the mail February 9/1991. Total cost to me was $165.00.

Well my granddaughter and my M1 Garand are prettier than yours.

The M1 Garand is surprising not only for it's offhand accuracy, low recoil, appearance and ping but it's so functionally reliable. I really LOVE my SA. Together with the Inland and Rockola M1 Carbines they always draw admiring attention at the range. Yes I am proud of them and my granddaughter too.

I need to work on the extractor on this SA. It's chewing up the rims of the cases. I also find annealing the cases after 3 firing extends the case life up to 6 to 8 reloads. 06 brass isn't as easy to come by as it used to be.
An ignorant person is one who doesn't know what you have just found out.

When setting a job up for myself it must be Idiot Proof as well, as I am a bigger idiot than most people I know, and I prove it to myself everyday.

They have some advantages/disadvantages like anything else. For me, I prefer to have my rifle tuned right and reload the right cartridge for it. My cartridges are/were suggested for me by a gentleman with the name of "Hook" Boutin, a Master Armorer and the man in charge of the Army Marksmanship Unit when the Army beat the Marine Corps with Garands.

He tuned my rifle to AMU standards, including bedding the stock, trigger tune, gas system mods, handguard inletting and gas cylinder tightening. He also taught me a lot about the correct mindset for serious, hardcore, long range accuracy and consistency. In addition to all that, he showed me what it took to reload for the M1 and get 1" at 100 yards (If your base gun was capable of it.) He even shared a couple swigs of some sort of fine liquor he had stored out in his shop. Good stuff, but it would burn your eyes out if you took too deep a draught.

I think he liked me because my Dad was a WWII Marine and I'd been in the Army as well. He shared a lot of interesting stories about the Germans and their weapons. Here's what he said about the Storm Gewehr: "It was tough when you came up against some of those guns." He served with the 101st Airborne when they established their reputation.
