Short Barreled 30-06
Well, I put theory in motion tonight and hacked down the barrel on my Savage 111. I'm trying to accomplish the feel and handling of a Remington Model 7 at about 1/4 the price. Went from 22" to 18". Dropped 4 ounces, and it feels like I gained a whole lot of balance and maneuverability.
I'll keep posting on the progress. Next up will be filing the muzzle square, polishing, and crowning. After that I'll get some handloads made specifically for the barrel length in order to reduce muzzle blast.

Now the trick is crowning that puppy so she shoots good. I'm thinking of doing this to my remy 700 it has a 26 or 24 inch heavy barrel it would sure help her to be 18 inches.

Does it work ok to just cut the crown in the barrel with a lathe?
When they were first turning out Sharps Buffalo rifles I'm sure the equipment was not very sophisticated by our standards today, they shot straight. I wonder how they were crowned?

Re: Short Barreled 30-06
Greetings
Have used a good quality machinist square and files finishing with a diamond lap. 1st was a 58 Zuoave that had a dinged muzzle. Next were several older rifles with injured muzzles. Last has been a Winchester 92 in 44 WCF. Had to take almost two inches off to get to good rifling. Now shoots well enough to hit 3 inch rocks at 70 yards with me sitting behind cross sticks. You may not have a "high tech" counter bored muzzle but perfectly square served rifleman for at least 300 years.

I'm sure a lathe is preferred... I dont have one so i will be using a round headed brass screw chucked into a electric drill, with a generous dollop of valve grinding compound.Steve wrote:Does it work ok to just cut the crown in the barrel with a lathe?
