Here is a much more complete work on the Laflin & Rand powders. The original cans say it all; Bullseye for revolvers and Unique for reduced loads in the 30 Cal US Gov't Rifle (30-40 Krag) and Service Revolvers (38 Long Colt).

10 grains of Unique in a .308 Win behind a 168 grain lead bullet is a nice light recoil, low noise but still gets that crack from the bullet going faster than the speed of sound.

I keep reading that 10gr of Unique is supposed to be a starting point for most reduced rifle loads.

Not sure about that but it was the universal load over at castboolits so I gave it a try and it worked great. I might do more testing when done testing the TiteGroup load.

I might do the same as they may be more accurate at 50+ yards.

I used unique to go subsonic in my lever action 480 Ruger. I shot 8 rounds out of the walkout basement while the wife made dinner. She only heard 2 that sounded "more like you dropped a bag of cement on the floor." All were above power levels commonly used to take deer with 45LC revolvers. Hopefully soon I'll try it with my 444 marlin. If you have QuickLoad you can ask it to give you a list of powders that fill the case to a certain percentage and achieve a target velocity.

About that 10 gr of Unique. ...
I put it in a 264 WM with a 125 gr cast paper patched and shot it just shy of 1600 fps . I was quite surprised that it was that fast considering the cavern of the case and the long bbl i expected more like 1200 .

Wish I would have had a crony but still enjoyed the low noise and recoil and most of all the crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier. That was a big surprise to me.
