Cat sneeze loads

Post by 62chevy »

I finally took the plunge and made some up for my savage Axis in 308 Win. I made 5 each of 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 4.0, 4.2, 4.5, 4.7 and 5.0 of TiteGroup. The bullet is the Lee TL314-90-SWC sized to .311, made with 50/50 clip on/pure lead.

I didn't shoot for accuracy but just wanted to make sure nothing got stuck in the barrel and thank God nothing did because I left my ram rod at home. :o Also I wanted to know how much recoil they made and the sound or how quit they were.

No disappointment on either recoil or sound. The 5 grain load gave a very mild push on my shoulder and the sound was not much more than the 22 LR revolver my was shooting. As would be expected the lower the load the recoil got lighter as did the sound. Once they got below 4 grains it wouldn't even push the rifle back and it sounded more like a pop instead of a bang. I don't own a crono so can't report on FPS but can say I didn't hear any cracks of the sound barrier like with 10 grains of Unique and the 168 grain lead bullet.

I can't give you a tight group guide . Unique however needs 2.7 to clear the muzzle with a 150, up to about 6.0gr was sub to transonic in both a 308 and 06'. All of that will of course be dependent on bbl dia and chamber /throat dimensions. With any accuracy Red Dot topped out about 8.0 and at 1200 fps ,I didn't Chrony the lighter loads but Im sure that at 5 gr they were well down under 900 fps .

Just as an interesting note with a 130 I had to back a bit 7x6.8 Rem down to 3.5 Unique to get it sub sonic . It had just gone flat as far as reducing ,8 was at like 1400 ,7 was at like 1250 ,6 only dropped to 1180 ,5 was over 1100 , 4.5 was even over 1100. At 3.5 it was just over 800.

The basic nothing Chrony brand is still just 119 bucks. When you shoot it ,you will eventually get it with a wad, gas check or bbl goober if you don't straight up shoot it,Chrony will fix it and do so adding the next up grade for 8 believe its $80 but it may be $96 . The 2nd 1 I bought gave all the same velocities as the 1st one which I still haven't sent off but I intend to soon.

I had no idea you could make reduced loads with Titegroup. I usually use Trail Boss.

With Bullseye you can go a little bit lower in the charge, Unique a bit higher. Most over at CB said TiteGroup is not as good as Bullseye. Bullseye being more accurate.

I looked it up a while ago and I didn't know both Unique and Bullseye were originally formulated for rifle loads. Crazy. I thought Bullseye was always a pistol powder and Unique was a shotgun powder that made a good medium burn magnum powder. But then 2400 started as a rifle powder. I think in 22 Hornet.

Didn't know that about Bullseye either.
