Quick Draw!
Spotted this pole cat a few days ago messing around my chicken coop in broad day light. I set up and popped him w/ the 223. I was pretty sure I hit him good since he did "the spin" and then just dropped. I watched him through binoculars for 5 mins to make sure he wasnt moving. Even then I figured I better take my single six out there just in case. I got about 20 yards away, grabbed a rock and pitched it over to him. It hit the ground about 2ft from his head and he never moved. I walked closer. Sure enough at about 15 paces that sucker stood right up and looked at me! Somehow I got one good shot off w/ the 22lr before he did. He rolled over, died, and then he let it ALL go anyway! If you've never smelled skunk spray fresh out the critter, consider yourself lucky! Last year my dog got sprayed trying to run one off and i didnt know it till the dog came BACK IN the house! I could hardly breathe it was so strong.

Another chicken getter gets got!
I had a dog that didn't care if it got sprayed, it would wade in there and kill them no matter the resistance. It even got sprayed right down the throat. It passed skunk gas for a month! No kidding.

So the poor guy didn't get to get under the covers with you then?Ranch Dog wrote:Another chicken getter gets got!It passed skunk gas for a month! No kidding.
Here's a question on a serious note. I heard that skunks and bats were the #1 vectors/carriers of rabies?
An ignorant person is one who doesn't know what you have just found out.

Re: Quick Draw!
I think any of the little critters make the list. Foxes and coons are big on the list here.

Re: Quick Draw!
I try to always eliminate them as I don't want them to end up in the barn. You can "herd" a skunk at night to where you want them for the kill to exactly where you want them for wind drift or backstop with a flashlight. They casually move away from the beam so you can steer them to any location you desire.Steve wrote:When a skunk comes around I head the other direction.
I killed a large skunk last week with my Rossi 92 chambered in 357 Mag. I use a .360 round ball in front of a case full of Trail Boss. I started using this setup instead of a 22 RF, all of which I sold. Not going to pay the money they want for the ammo of which has not been on the shelf in my small town since 2008.
I killed a feral cat, skunk, and raccoon prowling my house at night last week, all 25 yard shots. That round ball really thumps them dead!

Re: Quick Draw!
They made it illegal to shoot feral cats in Iowa, must have been 5 years ago or so. I still can't imagine why they passed such a stupid law.
