A Remington 722 chambered in 300 Savage joined my other rifles this past week. I've been looking for a bolt rifle in this cartridge and stumbled across a really nice 1949 722. This is the only year that Remington offered the chambering. I was told by the seller that it was a 99% rifle with little use and he was not messing with my emotions. This rifle looks like it was just taken out of the box!
The rifle came with a period Weaver K4 that is just as clean. I had put the Bushnell on the rifle for the first shooting session. The Weaver Steel rings that are on the K4 (wrap over straps) will go and I will use the Weaver Quad-Lock 4x4s.
It shoots very well. It is really strange to look at the quality that was put into manufacturing back in this period. This was a very simple rifle aimed at getting the outdoorsman to choose it rather than all the surplus arms available. I believe they sold for $83 in '49 which makes out to $824 into today's dollar. A guy back in '49 had just as tough a decision as we have today I guess.

That is a great looking old rifle in my favorite classic caliber. Too much envy.

Re: Rem 722 ~ 300 Savage
Bolt rifles chambered in 300 Savage were popular here in South Texas back when I was a kid, I remember a number of them in the camps and on the leases we hunted. I don't think short actions in 308 Win were common until the early sixties so prior to that the 300 Sav was the short action 30 caliber.
When I was a young kid, I bought a Mossberg 800A in 308 Win from my yard cutting proceeds and I never saw another 308 Win in any of our camps save one Savage 99. I did get a lot of grief along the lines of "why didn't you just buy a 30-06?" By the time I got out of the Army in '75, the 308 Win was now in wide use here including the older guys that had shot the bolt 300 Sav rifle. One hunter whom I really admired, Leland Preiss, told me he was always sorry he turned the 722 ~ 300 Sav. Mr. Preiss spent a lot a time turning me into the hunter I am today. He passed in 1988.
