Deformed finished bullets

Post by Papabear97 »

I'm just starting out reloading. Someone gave me the lee load master set up for 40 cal handgun. After setting up and lots of reading, my finished bullets have a small indentation below the lead on the casing. I can't find a reason other than the lead bullet is about .003 to .005 bigger than the jhp. Is there a tolerance for the lead bullets? I will post a pic asa I figure it out.

That's OK. This happens when your calibrate more than necessary, and your bullets asks as an expander. With standard dies you can't change calibration size, so don't worry. With different brand dies and cases this indentation can be more or less, but it's usually harmless, as long as the rounds feed well.

Actually, a plain lead cast bullet should be over sized to seal the bbl and not lead.

Pull your bbl out and drop a round into the chamber it should drop in (the plunk test)or just touch not a plunk but acceptable. I have Colts dies that finish a round looking like a Coke bottle.
