Red the Rooster
Seems like a slow morning so I though I would introduce you to a fellow that has become my friend. The last weekend of August, I had a New Hampshire Red rooster show up. He had made the trek from my closest neighbor's place up on the highway, probably 500 to 600 yards away. I knew my neighbor had a bunch of these chickens that he had bought in the spring from Tractor Supply so I went and told him about this fellow. He said that the lot he bought had several roosters and they one that left had been one of the less dominate birds and that I could have it if I wanted or bring it back. I figured that I will let him stick around in that he immediately had taken a like to me. The fact that he made it across all that brush wearing such a stand out color really surprised me. I don't know how he made it with the coyotes and bobcats that are very active in that area!
Anyway, Red has a permanent home as long as he wants. If he ever decides to leave, he will be missed as he is quite a character. My red healer and him have become big buds. He enjoys chasing squirrels more than my dog seems to but together they have become quite the security team for the ranch! He is my constant shadow but never under foot.

During the youth hunt he was the center of attention and a good addition as none of the kids had ever gotten up to a real rooster's crowing. In fact, when I was asked what time should the alarms be set I told them to enjoy not setting them and let Red get you up. The timing of his crow is perfect for hunting and getting to the blind plus it gets you up a bit different than the blaring of the artificial device. I recorded his crow while the kids where out on stand and everyone left with a ringtone for mornings to come.
Here he is fellows. Red the Rooster.

Nothing like a rooster to let you know where you are, lol. Can't get that in the city.

If you want a SERIOUS guard critter get a goose. We had 3 and they attacked any one or thing coming up our drive.
