300 MP

Post by 44-40 Willy »

Has anyone tried Alliant 300 MP in a 357 rifle? I'm wondering how it would work in my 1892.

I asked at another reloading forum and the only response was to stick with 2400 as 300 MP is a fairly new powder and everyone should stick with tried and true powders.

Well, seeing as I have never heard of this powder yet, curiosity got the better of me so I went to the website and discovered this;
http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/ ... rtridge=28

Might be a decent place to start. I figure if they are publishing the data on the interwebz, it must be pretty well lawyered up.

What projectile were you considering using?

If I can find some more Winchester Silvertip 145gr JHPs, that would be my first choice. 158gr Speer Gold Dot would be my second.

willy,

I have used up about a 1/2 pound of a can of 300mp so far. I got it cause I could not find 110/296, and from everthing I can find to read about it, it's almost a direct substitute. It takes a little more of the 300 to get the same speeds though. I have only used it in 44 mag for some sonic boom loads with jacketed bullets. I use unique and 800x for the majority of my shooting. It should do fine in a 357M.

Thanks Don!

Is it a ball powder like H110? My Lee Perfect Powder Measure seems to want to leak H110 from the drum seams.

Yes.
Some say it is even smaller than 110 but it looks real close to me. It also seems to be more dense so it might actually be littler.

I set wy powder measure to throw 20.0 of 296, and it threw 20.15----20.2 of the 300mp.

it "LOOKS" identical to me.
