Surplus Powders

Post by beekeeper »

Fired the first of what I hope will be a lot of WC860 Surplus powder today.
Test fired 10 rounds in an old beat up 91/30 that I have.
47 grains of powder and a 314299 cast bullet.
Fired them just to be sure it would work and was not trying to hit anything.
Was hitting berm at 300 yards and the target multiple times.
Velocity was good at 1740 fps and very little unburnt powder left in barrel.
have had worse using IMR 4895.

All in all I have high hopes for this powder and if I get it to shoot on target will buy all I can afford.
It sure will tide me over the rough times which I think are yet to come!!

Sounds like a descent start. Near 1800 fps is a whole heap faster than what old BP loadings were so there is plenty of power there. If you have a heavier cast try that. Or even a mag primer.
I have been thinking back to duplex loads. I bet 4 grains Unique with a toilet tissue wad to seperate the two would get the burn temp up. Something like the 06 with a higher overall pressure design would get some good base data to work with.
3 weeks I should be back and setting up my bench again..
