Auto Prime XR.......what am I doing wrong.
Hello all,
First up, I'm a Lee man 100%, I Load all my calibres on Lee equipment. I have 3 Lee Pro. I bought the new Auto Prime XR cos I liked the looks of it and because you can set it down on its square side.
This week I got it out to hand Prime some .45acp for a competition, but I can't get it to work! I have used the old round AutoPrime for years.
Here's the problem which I hope the photos show. The little ram that halts the primers, after one has been taken onto the actual ram, will not drop low enough to let a new primer pass. It sits high and nothing I can see will make it retract. I've disassembled it and can see nothing obviously wrong.
Any ideas? I can send more photos if needed.

This is a really dumb question. I cannot find the XR on the Lee website. Has it been discontinued? I've looked at a couple of retailers as well, nada.

It looks likes the "Auto Prime XR" was replaced by the "New Auto-Prime" (same part #90230). What is different is the tray.Ranch Dog wrote:This is a really dumb question. I cannot find the XR on the Lee website. Has it been discontinued? I've looked at a couple of retailers as well, nada.

If it's similar to the RCBS version the actuator connected to the hand lever can over-center inside the handle and keep the rod from dropping.

Check that the clip hasn't slipped. It should hold feed ram tight against cam follower.

Thanks to all who have posted. I should say that the Auto Prime is new and has never been used.
Some more detail might help. When the tray and ram assembly are removed that first pin sits flush but when the AutoPrime is assembled it sits proud causing my problem.
I will have do this with separate post as all photos won't post.

I have pointed to this piece of metal which I think might be somehow connected to my problem.
Macd, in your photo I do not see this piece of metal. It won't remove easily as its part of the mechanism. Does yours have it?

I'm baffled by this because it's a simple piece of kit.
Here's a view of the ram and the problem ram sitting proud. When assembled it won't retract, when disassembled it falls flush as it should be. I've highlighted that thin metal piece.
How does it compare to your AutoPrime?

No mine does not have that metal piece. I have the older type with the square primer tray. It sure looks like it would cause your problem if it rides up on the cam.
