TLC311-170-RF?

Post by Mainehunter »

I did some research on 30 cal. bullets and stumbled across the above mold. I know this particular mold was designed for the Marlin 308EX and there was a limited run but was wondering if anybody tried them out in the 300 Savage especially in a Savage 99?

This one will be tough to find as there were only 52 of them cut. Here is the bullet he is talking about

Looking at it real quick, all I see is that the neck of the 300 Savage is quite a bit shorter and the throat is shorter. That means that the bullet body is going to extend quite a bit below the base of the case neck. If you were to find a mold, I would not pay a premium for it as I don't think it will fly well. Once a bullet body is inside the combustion chamber (the case interior below the base of the neck) funny things happen to it.

Hmmm..... I was under the impression the throat was long so therefore this particular bullet won't work as far as the nose profile goes. I love lever action rifles, mostly have Savage 99's in various calibers but none of them in 300 Savage  BUT there's one at my local gun shop that I have my eye on.

The dimension references are for the SAAMI cut. Savage might have done something else on their own, you would know without a chamber impression. My previous spouse had a 99 chambered in 300 Savage but she passed right as I was getting interested in the design work. I never took a chamber impression from the rifle but did try to apply my TLC311-165-RF to it but did not have much luck. The bullet body was too long and accuracy performance suffers with the body past the base of the case neck. I ended up selling the rifle.

As a note, I was interested in having the Savage 10 FCM Scout I just purchased delivered in 300 Savage. I talked with the Savage custom shop about it and they liked the idea but it would add a $300 premium to the straight up MSRP of $865. As I pondered the value of a $1165 rifle, they suggested I try the 7.62x39 and "just put the wood to it" as they thought I would like it. I do like it but had they had a 300 Savage rifle, I probably started there.

You probably would like the 250 savage round too. It is an efficient little cartridge. Saw one in a browning bolt action, was a sweet handling rifle.

I had a Savage 99 chambered in 250 Savage. I thought the cartridge a little light for South Texas hunting. The hogs didn't seem to notice it much.

I loaded some lee 173 grain Into 300 savage. I loaded to max oal 2.6" but haven't shot any yet. Had to resize 308 to get most of my brass but it is pretty easy job. I don't load for speed anymore, just need to get used to the gun. It has the scope mounted on2 mount base with pins. I may have to put a single base on it.
