Enfield Minie Bullets

Post by dagger dog »

HELLOOOO ANYBODY HOME ? !!!!

Guess there's a first for every thing !

I recently took possession of a 1861 Pattern Enfieid musketoon , 58 cal. (.577" bore), and bought the Lee 90481-575-500-M mold.

Questions to the forum members, anyone shoot this bullet, do you think stick-on wheel weight lead is soft enough to upset the skirt, or do I need to use pure lead ?

The stick on material I have comes to 6-7 on the BHN scale using my Lee tester. Any

Don't cast for it but do for the 45/70 with the Lee 405g hollow base. Paul Matthews suggest using 1 to 20 tin lead, as in 99% lead. I will say that alloy/bullet for my wonderful 1888 Trapdoor is very impressive with 75g of Goex. These old rifle were designed for soft lead. Who am I to argue with Matthews? ;)

Got to fire up the pot and cast a few when the weather permits, we've been in the deep freeze for a couple weeks and the time has been taken up with keeping the house warm.

I bought a few 500 gr bullets from the Lyman original minie mold, going to shoot a few of those first.

I'll get back with the results from the Lee mold.

Thanks
