A little more Muzzle Loader help, Please..

Post by larryw »

Trying to get this little Country Boy Side lock ready to go for
a buddy who is a paraplegic from being shot in the back
during a robbery at his home. Questions are on gear.
1-) Nipples, are they all the same??
2-) Primer (cap??) are they the same?
3-) Has a little ram rod, wood with brass ends, a little
concave cup for ramming & tamping, other end threaded,
are the attachments for the threaded end all the same thread??

And Yes, I already have a B/P load book & a How to book
on the list for him as well as a Shooters kit, powder flask,
starter Etc. As always, any help would be greatly appreciated....

In modern bp guns, I haven't seen to much variety in nipple or primer caps. That gun your useing if this is the mule ear could have variations I'm not aware of. I'm not an expert so I'd suggest even calling midwayusa if noone here clarifies throughly. They have staff that will be able to better help in most cases. Some of these guns come with accesseries. That even fit into compartments in buttstock. Generally wadding patches/cleaning patches, a cleaning jag sometimes which probably screws onto your ramrod. The threads on it can be proprietary. Only way to know is to try different ones till you find a winner, or just clean it with a standard rod.

Unfortunately, there's a huge variety of nipples, caps and cleaning rod threads.

This is a list of nipple threads from a German webshop. The thread sizes and gun manufacurers names are multilingual ;). Ignore the second table on this page, it's about flintlock flints.

Most common on US made guns should be .250/28, but you can't be sure.

Cap size depends on the actual nipple used, it should have a good grip, but still be able to be pushed all the way down until it has level contact with the nipple top. This is something you just have to try.

Cleaning/ram rod threads: Well, basically every maker has his own version... I even got two rods from the same maker, one with M4 male thread, the other with M4 female thread. And I bought more than one brush with the wrong connection for my rods... that's very annoying.

I knew someone with better knowledge than me would chime in. I could only comment on what I have seen which is very little obviously in bp shooting.

The US makers of BP guns seem to have silently aggreed on using the .250/28 nipple thread. At least most do. Especially unhelpful are the Italina replica makers... I even have two different sizes on a single gun... the LeMat uses different nipple threads in the cylinder chambers and and the center shotgun barrel :?

To make it even better, the Italians also use a .250/28 nipple thread, that is considerably larger on it's outside diameter, so if mixed up the standard US .250/28 won't fit, and the Italian .250/28 might (and has in the past) break and blast its remains in the shooters face. That's why the shop I cited sells two kinds of .250/28 nipples: the "US" version, and the "Pedersoli" version... :o

If it's that Italian one showed here then Pedersoli is the name and 6mmx0.75 pitch is the game.

Do get a proper ram/cleaning rod!
The one supplied with the rifle is more for show than actual use. It is not a matter of if but when it will break or loose an endcap in the bore.

Most all modern guns use a RWS1075 or CCI#11 cap.

You probably know this but DO NOT load directly from the flask!
Back in the 70's if i remember correctly a guy lost most of a hand because there were ambers in the chamber and the flask with several ounzes of BP cought fire and acted as an impromptu handgrenade.
