Texas Deer Opener

Post by Ranch Dog »

I'm slowing down on my whitetail hunting; prefer seeing kids having the opportunity to hunt. This young fellow killed his first spike buck, but what a spike. Shooting a Savage bolt gun chambered in 7-08.

As far as my hunting this year, I held close to my SMLE Scout. Love this rifle. On March 21st, I loaded 50 rounds with the PPU 180-grain SPBT and 45 grains of Hybrid 100V. I have two remaining. A total of thirteen rounds were shot over the months at my range as I headed back to kill hogs, just something I do regularly. 37 hogs fell to those rounds. Yeah, the math doesn't work out right as I had two shoot throughs killing two hogs each time. Eight hogs dropped this past week.

Yeah, the hunt was on my place.

Yeah, the hogs keep coming and I have no problems killing them. They are a plague on the habitat. Hogs now outnumber whitetails and down the road, there is going to be a price to pay.

The buck's right rear ankle had been broken and healed with damage to the hoof and shank. With deer, injuries that happen behind the shoulders are reflected in antler development on the opposite side. Shoulders and forward, antler development is impacted on the same side.

That's good to know . It's not something really encountered with "big sky" mule deer .
