Successful Moose License Draw

Post by Macd »

Haven't been around much. Busy time of year and been away a lot. I did enter this year's moose license draw and have an either sex tag for an area around where I park my travel trailer for the season. Even managed to get a local hunter to join me. He has a cow only tag. The decision now is which rifle. I usually would use the 35 Remington with a 205 grain lead bullet but I am leaning toward my Parker Hale in .303 British and a 180 grain jacketed. Then again a Mauser action 30-06 and have some 190 jacketed for it. Then again the Model 99 in 308 win deserves a field trip with a speedy 150 grain Interlock. Decisions, decisions, decisions lol.

Congratulations on the "dual" tags, don't know how hard it is to get Moose tags where you live, I don't think they even have them in this state, tags, not moose. There are a few moose over in the north east part of the state that wander in. The rifle part would be an easy decision for me, the 06', my favorite cartridge and what all others are compared to. Another big plus is I've always been enamored with the Mauser action. Without question my favorite. Good luck on your hunt. I've eaten moose off the barby and it was the best meat I've ever tasted, might have been the cook, however we were all drinking at the time so who the heck knows.

06 all the way.
If you get a bull, are you going to mount the head on the hood of your truck for the winter?
When I lived in Canada, I had to go up to Baie Comeau and Port Cartier often. There were moose heads on the trucks all over till they rotted off in the spring.
I wish I had taken the time to go hunting up there. Beautiful country. I did go hunting North of Schefferville on the George River.
I got a caribou the last 5 minutes of the hunt.

No pickup trophy for me. Hoping to shoot a younger more tender animal.

Same for me.
No mater how much tenderizer you put on or how long you cook them the antlers are just too hard to chew.
