Slugs

Post by Ranch Dog »

It is almost time for me to get going on some slug loading. Hodgdon seems to have more information than any for the required components but using only one wad each for 7/8 and 1 ounce; the WAA12L & WAA12SL respectfully, but either wad has not been in stock anywhere for 6 months now.

I've been slowly looking for wad substitutes but it is a bit of a costly project as there is nothing available locally where I can just place a slug in the shot cup and say "good to go" or not.

The biggest thing that I have noticed so far, is that the thickness of the cup walls seem to be critical so that the slug can be seated. For instance the MEC 78T4 is touted as a direct replacement for the 12L and the MEC 100T4 a replacement for the 12SL. The 78T4 doesn't work out where the 100T4 does and it is directly related to the cup wall thickness, you cannot slide a slug down into the 78T4 cup.

I've got the Claybuster CB0178-12 coming, another supposed direct replacement for the 12L, on the way and will see how they fit.

Anybody else working with the Lee slugs?

Thanks, the MEC 100T4 wad I posted was a direct replacement for the 12L, it is the 12SL I'm working on.

It is the thickness of the cup walls that matters and that is something that isn't discussed or listed in any of the discriptions. It is just like fitting a muzzleloader bullet to a sabot so that it fits the rifled bore. These slugs where designed to fit the Winchester wads (their wall thickness) and substitution needs to be the same.

I'm trying. If this is still wrong then just give me a list of which ones you are for sure looking for and I can keep an eye open for them.

Wait. I think I'm still not reading what you are saying.

These say they replace the SL version. Are these right?

Dude, you are like my cow dog! Never throws in the towel! Thanks... but I'm looking for the 12L. I've got the Claybusters substitute coming so I will wait to see how they workout before I go any further.

Lee needs to make a wad for his slugs. something that would stabilize it like the factory wads do.

The slugs where designed with the Winchester WAA12L & WAA12SL trap wads in mind for this purpose.

Boy you do! That came up in my searches as well. $27.75 for 250 is a bit steep when they should go $9 (even at todays inflated prices) for 500
