I don't know what they go for now ......

Which forced me to go look one up .

MEC universal charge bar . They're $51.00 about the cost of 3 charge bars . They have inserts for small , large , and steel shot . They remove any need for bushings and are micrometer marked for repeatability . I have these in 3/5 my MEC presses . Worth it if you load several loads per gauge , more so with changes in shot load .

I appreciate the info RB and I considered it. The Slugger came with three bushings so I looked at their chart against the powders that I use and might buy, and seven more bushings would totally cover the range. In that, the bushings are $4.29 each, it was cheaper to go with the seven more.

With the slugs, the Lee bushings for charges have worked well although they could have one or two increments that were higher. What I've learned with the slugs is that there really isn't anything about fine-tuning the charge.

It has been a bit of a roller coaster with the MEC Slugger. First press received from MidwayUSA was damaged and MEC ended up sending me another. Then the learning curve as there is no documentation for the specific purpose of the press, loading slugs. They send you an owners manual for the 600 Jr. Mark V and a sheet with just five troubleshooting answers concerning the three dies. Nothing on how to set the dies, which are supposedly set at the factory, nor adjust them. There are only this one sheet and one video of less than a minute. Nothing else. It has made me appreciate the Lee instructions, even more, Lee's precise style of technical writing, a skill that MEC does not achieve. The 600 Jr. manual is the wordiest press document that I've read. A lot of words that end up going nowhere. :|

All that said, and after 150 crushed hulls getting the three crimp dies adjusted, I'm on my way, and it is slicker than snot!

In that, this is neither a roll or a folded star crimp, but rather a folded roll crimp, it opens up a lot of possibilities that could only use the star crimp such as the Lee slugs.

Man, that Hammerhead say-bow is one nasty looking slug. I will assume the Slugger will also work on a regular shot shell load using an overshot card (?). Looks to be a pretty good "roll crimp". I like using them (roll crimps) but for loading a bunch of shells it can be a bit tedious using my "old style" roll crimper.

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that most "how to" instructions are written by people that already know "how to" with the item described so they forget or don't think about telling you that something may be easier to "how to" if you "just lean it to the left a bit when removing the widgit".....the first fuel injection pump I replaced on my cummins diesel took me 9hrs with the instructions provided. They were good instructions, even had pictures, but several small "suggestions" were not included. The second one I replaced (a friends truck) took me 4hrs because I now knew the small "idiosyncrasy's" of the replacement. That's why "real" men don't need no "stinking" instructions......
