Loaded for Moose

Post by Macd »

So the season opens Sept 11 and I have been considering which rifle and load to use. My old favourite is the 35 Rem with a 204 grain hard cast with a big meplat. I was pretty much decided this time to use a 303B with a 180 grain round nose soft point just like the load I used for my first moose. Then I was going through the cabinet and my Savage 99 looked back. Never used it in anger so I said "Why not.". It is a 308 Win. I went through my preloaded 308 rounds and they all were match bullets. On the back of my bullet shelf I found a box of 20 Barnes 168 grain TSX. They now are seated in some shiny Win nickel plated cases with 42 grains of H4895 ready for ignition by the CCI 200 primers. Next week a trip to the range to dial in and ready for the big one.

Range Report.

Sorry no pictures.
Fired 3 rounds. Avg 2609 fps. After correction of first shot to point of impact (POI)and then raising for a maximum point blank range of 309 yards fired next shot at 50 yards for a hit on centre line just about 2 inches above point of aim (POA). Next shot was at 100 and just clipped centre line at a little over 4 inches above POA. I will take it. Moose have a 16"x18" vital zone so I figure I am well within minute of moose.

Doncha' just love it when a plan comes together ;) Seems like all you need now is a Moose that will cooperate with the plan.... :D Good work and good report. Keep us informed as to the hunt. Location not important but would be interesting to hear about. :geek:

Several years ago a guy on Castboolits asked " where's the best place to shoot a moose ?" Hands down no contest the best answer was "if not in the bed of your truck , then as close to a fork lift as you can ".

Good luck !

LOL. The last moose I shot was a five hour carry for 4 of us. I sure regretted pulling the trigger by the time we finished.

Good luck !
