6.5 Brass

Post by killian6pk »

Could someone explain the differences in 6.5 Brass. I see many different brass cases for sale. 6.5 swedish mouser, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5-300, 6.5 PRC, and it seems more. Also how is 308 brass related to 6.5? Can someone tell me which Lee shell holder fits 6.5 creedmoor. In all the lists I see even from different manufacturers I never see 6.5 creedmoor listed. All these others seem to be listed, but not the cm. Thanks

If your loading manual has cartridge drawing compare the 308 Winchester to the 6.5 Creedmoor. It appears to me that for all intents the 308 Win is the parent case for the Creedmoor. The shoulder is shoved back and sharpened and the neck reduced to take the .264 bullet. So in theory if you've got empty 308 cases, a strong press, solidly mounted and good lube you could make 6.5 Creedmoor from the 308. A shell holder for the 308 should work.

I don't have dimensions for the 6.5/300 but I would say it's the 300 Winchester necked down to hold 264 bullets, which is basically the 264 Winchester so there may be some differences or it may be another 300 entirely.

The 6.5 Swede is a Swedish/Norwegian/Finish military cartridge and a darn fine long range cartridge in it's own right. It's closest US equivalent is probably the 260 Remington. I've been shooting 6.5 mm cartridges since 1970 and I like them. My first was a 6.5mm/06 and my latest is the 6.5 Grendel.

The 6.5 CM is called as a 308 child but it's closer to the 300 Savage and 22-250 shorter by .15 ish of the 308 . The 260 Rem IS 308 necked down to .264 . The 6.5 Swede is 6.5×55 and by the book has a slightly larger rim and head than its 7, 7.65 , 8 ,and 9 x57 sisters . 6.5-06' , 6.5-35 Rem are wildcats , and the 264 WM is a necked 7mm RM .

There's also the 6.5x50 Arisaka , 6.5×52 Carcano and not readily formed from another .
I'm sure there are some more .

Thanks guys, that stuff has always made me wonder when I see it in lists of shell holds, head space guages etc. I have always heard references to the 308 as maybe a parent case for the 6.5cm, but have never seen anything definitive as to how it was changed into the 6.5cm. Just one of those things that make you go hmm. I will check the 308 shell holder and see if it is the same as the #3 I am using now. I have also tried the #2 and they seem very close.
