7mm Mauser reloading mania?

Post by alphalimafoxtrot »

This may seem odd, but have you ever been foraging for brass at a gun range and discovered such a large amount of nice, shiny brass that you just gather it all up, regardless of if you have a gun chambered in that caliber?

Well, probably not, because most of you are sane human beings. However, twice now in my recent forays to the local WMA public shooting range I have stumbled upon roughly 40 shiny new 7mm Mauser PPU cases. To have nearly 80 cases of a round that I don't even have a gun for doesn't sound rational, but I am like my dog Wolfgang attracted to squirrels. I can't help it!

What this goes back to is that part of my interests in the gun hobby which include collecting, repairing, and shooting milsurp guns. By far, I enjoyed Mauser 98k's the most in comparison to the Mosin Nagant and even Enfields and old Springfield bolt rifles I used to fix, shoot, and (unfortunately) flip for something new to play with.

So that got me thinking: what new and old guns might be fun in 7mm Mauser? First off, it is a great round in terms of ballistics. But is just random discovery of empty brass enough?

To be continued...... +corn

I pick up any brass that looks okay then clean, inspect and put it away for trading or gifting purposes. Then there is always the possibility of finding a great deal on another firearm. Of course that means yet more dies, perhaps molds and sizers as well as more bullets. :D

My sole 7x57 is a Ruger #1 Alexander Henry style that shoots like a dream. Right now I tend toward lighter bullets for use as varmint rifle as it isn't a legal game cartridge here in Ohio. Always wanted one of the FNs semi autos in 7mm but they've dried up or become collectors items out of my price range.

Savage barrels are also available if you dig around some . An Axis or Stevens 200 long action would get you set up pretty inexpensively .
A 7mm08 can be reamed to a 7×57AI .
A heavy barrel for a 280 Rem like a gun show beater can be cut and rethreaded and reamed for 7×57 also .
