I've been putting together some ladders of .45 Colt loads for my Rossi 92. It likes Hornady 250 gr. XTPs, 240 gr. XTP Mags, and 225 gr. Barnes XPBs. I'm using Lil'Gun, Starline cases both nickel plated and plain brass, and CCI large pistol primers. Earlier testing had starting loads of all three of these bullets impacting very close to the same point relative to my aiming point. That was promising.

I've killed several whitetails, muleys, and antelope with the 250 gr. XTP. Now I'm curious how the other two bullets will perform on these smaller animals. Eventually I plan to develop an elk load for the Rossi. That may end up being the 300 gr. XTP.

At one point I'd run out of large pistol primers and couldn't buy any locally. I loaded a few large rifle primers and found that they did not protrude above the level of the case head. I plan to single load them and fire them at targets. I can't imagine having any problem with them since they are flush or below flush.

Tomorrow may be range day.

Decided to get the Savage 170 30-30 ready for a whitetail. I have both rifles that Savage offered; the 30-30 Win and 35 Rem.

I was experiencing vertical stringing with the above load, so I started looking at the rifle and found the aft scope base screw loose. Tightened it, but there was no change. I loaded the same components except with the Hornady #3060 170-grain FP, and there was no change other than the verticle spread being tighter. So back to the rifle as soon as I have the time to look at it. All screws are tight, so the first order of business will be to change out the scope with a spare.

On Friday, the afternoon before deer season, I sighted in and chronographed a load for my SMLE Scout. These cartridges were prepped for this work in the early Spring. I couldn't get to the shooting then because of the continuous rain, and when that stopped, our weather turned to a blue sky filled desert with no mercy from the sun until a week ago.

This is the 40th load I've tried with the SMLE. It is not the fastest (2155 FPS), but it is the most accurate (.711 MOA out through 200 yards).
