More newb questions

Post by iLR60Mac »

I will load for a GLOCK 27 (gen 4) .40 S&W. I have the breech lock press. I carry Hornady Critical Duty 175 grn. I want to stay as close to 175 as possible as I will be using my reloads at the range. What do you as the mind trust recommend for powder, primer, bullets, and brass?

I cast mine AND I'm working from NOS powder in the XD40 I load .
Win brass
CCI sm std primer
Lee 401-175 SWC TL
Unique

Bullets are water dropped wheel weights ,my mould drops these at .403 and 178-182gr lot to lot . These consistantly deliver 4-5'' at 25yd draw to Weaver stance 3shots holster per magazine. This 1 cycled well at about 4.0 gr but didn't really start to make groups until 5.0gr. Max loads are listed at 5.7gr and thats what I shoot in that XD40 for best groups. I tried aircooled bullets and my 9mm/38/357/45ACP/Colts alloy and in this case it needs the harder bullets to work well tumbling was the biggest issue w/the softer alloys. I'm sure that from a bench rest it would turn in 2'' groups, but then a bedroom/carry gun won't really be a rested take your time hunting tool .

Hello Mac, & welcome. Well, first thing I would suggest is
get 2 or 3 good manuals & study, compare & cross reference
the 9mm data for what bullet you will be using. From that
you will be able to decide on the powder you want based
on the velocities & pressures you will see in the data.
Powder, primer & brass??? 6 of one, & half dozen of the other.
All personal preference, & availability. We all have our's,
& you will develop your own in time. Above all else, always
start on the low end of the data & work your way up,
all the while watching for sign of over pressure,
& above ALL ELSE. Safety, Safety, Safety...
