Re: Need new scale

Post by mikld »

I have 4 beam scales and 2, digital scales (I got a couple good deals and one digital doesn't work). My most used scale is a Lyman/Ohaus with large markings that are easy to see. I also have a Frankfort Arsenal digital that I weigh bullets and brass with, and occasionally powder. The newer digital scales are better with fewer of the old complaints (wandering zero, EM interference, power needs), and my Frankfort Arsenal scale works pretty good so far. Mebbe I'm old school, but I much prefer a beam scale with mechanical settings and reading over some numbers that pop up in a display...

I'm not and won't be weighing bullets or brass-just powder. Maybe I should re think for a good quality-readable beam scale such as Dillon or RCBS 505.
Anything is better than fighting with the Lee scale

Rcbs 1010 is accurate. I cannot help on how easy to read it but to me its the easiest beam I have used. I have the original ohaus 1010 grey instead of green but identical. Rcbs has their name on it now. I got mine used on flebay. It needed parts to calibrate it called rcbs they sent me what I needed free no charge.

As far as Beam's go, I have 4, Lee, Old Herters, Lyman 500 Pro, & RCBS 505.
All extremely sensitive. as they should be & all very accurate when cross checked
against each other &/or with check weights.
The RCBS 505 is without a doubt the easiest for me to see hands down.
Large black numbers on a white & very light gray background, the numbers & hash
marks just seem to jump out at 'ya.
The digital that 62Chevy showed you is a good one also, I use one like it to,
Hope this helps some...

Very helpful. I think RCBS 505 is the one I'll go with. I need to be able to see clearly
Thank you all for your help !!

FWIW; I remember seeing a thread about a feller that had problems seeing/reading his beam scale. So, he took a small video camera, aimed it at the scale, sent the pic to a monitor to be viewed 4x original size, and better lit... :geek:

Howdy Mikld, I have tried that web-cam idea also.
Great idea, I just cant get my web-cam to give
me a clear, in focus image up that close???
Maybe a different cam, but a friend of mine uses
that method & it sure is sweet having the read out as
big as your monitor. I'll get it to work one day??

Wouldn't be a "lens lamp" also be helpful? Don't know the correct English word, but please see this picture:

All this equipment like a camcorder and monitor etc. talking more $$$ and taking more valuable space.
I think I'll go with the RCBS 505 which I can get from our local phantom reloading dealer, and go to the eye doctor for a good checkup
You have all been a help.
Thanks

Yup got one like that but with a big heavy base. Tends to get in the way at times but is great when reloading pistol rounds you can lower it and see the powder in the case.
