I'm mainly into Cowboy Action Shooting. I used to use TrailBoss, because it fills a .38spl case to the top with about 4 gr. A double charge is physically impossible. Now that TrailBoss isn't available any more (thanks to stricter chemical laws), I switched to TinStar. A double load is possible, but would definitely be noticed when placing the bullet. With powder like Unique BA10 (which is quite popular over here) or similar, I wouldn't even be able to see if there is any powder in the case at all, and most probably wouldn't notice a double charge. That's why I will stick with TinStar for the vast majority of my rounds.

I also load my .45Auto with TinStar. Both, 1911 and Thompson, work fine with that load.

Was doing some Quickload work and decided to run loads with IMR/H4227 for both the .223 Rem and the 45 Win Mag. Here are the results. Remember QL is not a guarantee and proper reloading precautions are always necessary.

223 Rem
18 Grains 4227
Hornady 55 Grain SP 2266 OAL 2.260
80% fill
2,900 FPS and 42,939 PSI
This load is comparable to the Lyman #49 cast load of 14 grains that delivered approximately 2,200 FPS when I substituted the Hornady bullet. I may give it a try myself as the bullet would be stable at this velocity shot from my 1 in 9 twist bolt rifle.

45 Win Mag
22 Grains 4227
Hornady 230 Grain FMJ-RN OAL 1.575
96.9% fill
1,465 FPS and 18,377 PSI
This load is 2 grains under the "Starter" load listed by Hodgdon for the flat point bullet. The Hodgdon load shows in QL as being 105% fill. I don't like compressing pistol loads so I dropped the 2 grains. I used the 230 grain round nose bullet as this is one I use for 45 ACP and in 45 Colt.

In both cases a double charge would result in powder spill.

Hope this helps.

I posted my range results for 223 and IMR4227in the Rifle Reloading section under the thread IMR4227. Pretty decent for a magnum handgun powder.
