Ready for reloading the 9mm

Post by Et2ss »

Or so I thought.....

Over the weekend, I finished setting up the Loadmaster.

Cleaned everything up, lubed, set up the case feeder, started on setting up the dies.

Universal decapper, check........ Cycled through about 50 or so cases through the decapper, all went well, and cycled the deprimed cases into a catch box

Primer feed.......... well that's where I got hung up. Was going to check the function, went to dig out my primers and realized that I have absolutely no small pistol primers :o

Had plenty of small rifle, large pistol and rifle, but not even 1 tray of small pistol!

I'll see if I can pick up some local, if not I'll check to see when the next fun-show is near me

I hate it when a plan doesn't come together

I wouldn't suggest this to a new reloader as "Use what yer manual says" is my normal reply. If you have some experience reloading and understand how primers affect chamber pressure you can safely try the small rifle primers. I have used small rifle primers in 9mm handloads with low loads of Universal and shot them in my LC9s. Approx the same, just a few fps more. If you are just checking function of your press, you could run a few SR primers through with starting loads of the powder of your choice.

I don't know if the harder metal of the rifle primer may cause 'click-no-bangs' in my pistols, I mostly shoot 9mm in my P225, and P228. Once in a blue the P226 (all early to mid 90's vintage).

I suppose I could sacrifice 100 SR primers to try it out.

Try 10 and get back to us. Eight or nine rounds are easier to pull than 99... :D

CCI states their small rifle primer is the exact same as the small pistol MAGNUM primer....I have no information on the other brands..

I had some CCI #400's which I tested out 15.

The standard CCI SR primers didn't want to feed through the loadmaster's primer feed

Just out of curiosity, are you using the latest generation of primer feeder?

Well I screwed down an RCBS bench primer last night to give it a whirl on some 6 x 45 brass I made.

The same batch of primers would not fit into the RCBS tubes.

I guess the diameter of this lot is too large?

They worked fine in my hand primer, really odd
