200gr FTX in a 454 CASULL

Post by f100cleveland »

I bought some 200gr ftx bullets designed for the S&W 460 for over 2000fps but can't find data for the 454. The are advertised in several places for the 460 or 454. Any thoughts on a starting load for the 454 Casull?

Work it up with data for similar bullet of 215 or 225 but don't exceed anything in print for any 200gr bullet .
From the Lyman 48th. For 454 with 225 JHP Speer
12.7-15.2 unique
25.7-29.5 2400
27-31.0. AA9
29.7- 33.5 IMR4227

it's not for a 200 but should get you started .

I found a load for a 185gr bullets using VihtaVuori powder but I've never seen any of that around here. I had planned on using H110 but do have some 4227 so at least thats a start. I have been loading XTP Mag's with 31gr of H110 behind the 300gr and 35gr behind the 240gr.

Loaded up a dummy round to see how length would be and found out it will be around .035 to long for the cylinder on the Raging Bull. I think when you buy ftx ammo for the 45 colt the cases are cut down some. I am going to cut down a case till I get clearance but don't know if I will get up to around 2000fps with the amount of powder I figured it would hold without a compressed load. I contacted Hornady but haven't received a reply. How much can you compress H110?

Hornady responded back that they have never tested this combo so couldn't recommend a load. I contacted Hodgdon powder and they wouldn't recommend any load either. Soooooo I trimmed a case .050 to get my OAL right so it cleared cylinder rotation then started with some loads at 32gr H110 then working up to 36gr witch is about a 110% compressed load. I had just a few flakes of unburned powder in case after the 36gr load so thats the highest I'm going. Cases pulled out with my fingers so no hard extraction and just a tad bit of primer flatning. I have to load up a few now to see what will be my accurate load.
