S&B 45 acp cases

Post by 62chevy »

Made a trade for some 45 acp case and feel I got the better end of the bargain. Tumbled and put away for later use well it's now later and most of the cases are S&B and most of them worked just fine for loading except 3 where the primer pocket was a bit small and could not insert a primer. Anyone else have this problem with a non-crimped case before?

Yup. Some of them are so square at the edge that the primer won't feed into the pocket. You can try to ream them open some but I much prefer to use a primer pocket swage tool.

More often than not S&B will skip on the extractor groove and the cases wont fit a shell holder.
I had a batch of 6.5x55 that had what seemed like crimped primers and i had to run them through my RCBS primer pocket swager before i could seat primers properly.

Had the same problem once with some S&B 45ACP.
Lyman primer pocket uniformer tool took care of 'em.
Have also used Lee military crimp remover to bevel
just a bit.

I see it on the S&B 7.62x39 cases as well. I was using the RCBS military crimp tool but have since been using the Lyman tool on my case prep station. I recently had some Hornady 308 Win cases do the exact same thing. The tools took care of it.

S&B is... a bit different. They make cases with primer pockets so small, my pro1000 won't seat a primer there, and they make primers so small they won't reliably stay in a primer pocket of a different brand case. Apart from that, the brass is OK, not the best out there, but OK.

I avoid using S&B cases, and actually squash and throw them away when I get any. I don't hazzle with a primer pocket swager, just to save these.

Ive only had them in 6.8 and 9mm . I haven't had an issue with pockets but the 9mm is small inside I guess . It jumps my standard load from solid function to bellybutton primers .
I've had no issues in the 7x6.8, same load and results as the Rem LRP .

I love the case prep station. It's so nice to get so many jobs done on one small platform. 8-)

Yeap! Now that I added the Lee case trimmer to it, I love it too!

I've had the same experience with 45 S&B tight/small primer pockets. Also, I've found that Hornady 45 primer pockets run tight, too.
