Not about a Lee mould , but ...........

Post by RBHarter »

It was so cheap I had to buy it !
When you find a 1939-51 iron mould that looks like it's cast maybe 3-4 sessions and the guy wants $20 for a mould you can use you snag it and run right ?

I scored Cramer B4 2 cavity for $20 .
Cramer was bought out by what is today Redding . The mould was a $12 mould new in 49-50' so not a cheap mould . This example is in near pristine condition ..........it however isn't a listed mould number ........ However sense I cast for almost every cal from 22-30 there wasn't much if any risk in buying it . The B's 1-3 were .280 dia bullets for the 270 Win . And it appears that the B4 is also a .280 design . I have to get the shop packed so maybe I can play the "I had to empty the pots to pack them card ....... It looks closer to 130gr than the 150 I'd have held out for but it will give me another choice for the 6.8 and paper patched 7mm .

Under the premises of empting the pot before I boxed it up ........
I cast a few . The are .280@130 with a .271 nose ...... It'll be ok in the Mossy 6.8 barrel 6 land .269×.277 but probably not so much in the ARP 5R .

I found a catalog on Cast pics and the mould sold for $7 in 1948 .
No listing for the Cramer B4 .

I read about Cramer and had it in my mind that they were in business from 46--55' .
I can't find the articles now ..... Seems like it was more like 1935-51 when they were bought by or sold to Redding . Except for scattered posts there isn't any reference to this mould number .

It is pretty cool to get some of these old moulds made by true craftsmen one at a time one hole at a time .

A while back I acquired an old H&G 8 cavity that was barn fodder . It cleaned up nice too . I gave $30 for it . In 1992 it sold for $215 shipped , H&G closed up shop in 94' .

Crazy how someone doesn't take care of something so valuable.
