Found this interesting video on the LSS.

Interesting video. I wonder about the magnet under the pan, wouldn't it pull the pan down and throw off the weight??

No, the pan is aluminium.

Wonder if it makes the LSS settle?

Lee should have won a very large prize for the perpetual motion machine they invented AKA Lee Safety Scale.

It should do a good job.
The way a magnetic damper works is the non magnetic electrical conductor ( usually aluminum but can be copper or any other conductor) generates electricity when it is moved through an electric field, (eddy currents) which are transformed into heat.In other words, the Kinetic energy of the moving scale beam is transformed to thermal energy.
Increasing the strength of the magnetic field just makes the operation more efficient.
The magnet under the scale pan is doing the same thing.
This was the subject of one of my physics classes about 50 years ago. It was so impressive I still remember it.

The beam on my scale has never oscillated. I like the idea of the magnet under to pan to calm it down.

Perhaps I'm just old and accept things the way they are, but I use, and like my Lee SS just the way it came from the factory. If I think the beam is moving too much, I use my index finger to slow it down. If the pan is swinging too much, I use that same index finger to stop the swinging, just a touch and it stops. If I'm in a hurry for powder charge weighing, I'll buy some pre-charged cases (factory ammo)...

I just reread my above reply and it kinda sounds snarky to me. I didn't mean to give an impression that the video was worthless or "Lee Hater" based. I guess I was just reacting from a recent bout with a Lee Hater on another forum. Yes, the Lee SS can be "improved" on and even if it can't, some fellers would customize their tools jest 'cause. I'm a confirmed tinkerer and I have "fixed" some of my equipment (I fixed a HF rotary tumbler so good it don't work anymore) and I just use my Lee SS as is, but this thread has me thinkin'...

Didn't sound snarky to me I just happened to hate my LSS enough to take $25 shipped minus commission fees on eBay for mine.

I tried the magnet under pan last night. Works really well.
