Perfect Powder Measure ?

Post by jlhog »

Hello, I have been using this for a while now and have a question. When throwing the charge sometimes the handle works nice and smooth. And then at other times I am struggling with it being stiff and hard to move.
Is this normal for this powder measure?
Can something be done to keep it more consistent?
I am considering upgrading but want to give this a shot first.

What powders are you having trouble with ?
The stick powders will sometimes be cut when throwing a charge. This gives a slight momentary bind until the stick is cut. I have not had any problems with flake or ball powders.

Hodgdon HP38. So it may be powder related? I was assuming it was the measure

Hodgdon HP38 is a spherical powder. I have never used it but I have used other spherical powders. They meter
quite well, but tend to leak. I have never had any sticking problems with spherical powders in the Lee PPM.
Try it with a flake powder and see if you still have the problem. It may be powder jamming up around the drum. (just a guess)

Take it apart and clean it with dish detergent and water. Wipe dry and check for roughness or damage. Use some dry graphite on all surfaces or you can run a few hoppers of powder through the measure. I leave a drier sheet in mine to help reduce static cling. When you reassemble tighten the rotor tension screw until it rotation is firm but not excessive. Lee says 16 oz of resistance but says max is 4 lbs. Mine is at 2 lbs measured with a trigger pull gauge. I have never had a powder leak.
