GasGuzzler wrote:Many in the industry would say Penzoil is not a quality name brand. I concur although I realize it's mostly based on myth. When I had race cars and drove race cars for daily transportation we all used conventional Valvoline 10-40 or 20-50 racing oil in the cooler months and straight 40W racing oil the rest of the year. I never saw an oil induced failure. I use Mobil 1 now and have for 15 years. Change it every 6K or so. on my Blazer I changed the filter every 5K and the Mobil 1 every 10K but I sold it with 267K miles so I can't tell if that was a reliable solution.

Well, you work on these things so you know what you're about. I only drive my truck on average about 8000 miles a year so I obviously don't change my oil as much as a lot of people do at a 5000 mile interval, so the cost isn't substantial at all. My truck takes 3 gallons of oil w/filter change. The Dondaldson filters ran me a bit over 15 bucks a piece when I last bought them 6 at a time (that's about 5 years worth, I still have three left from the last order) the oil I can get at NAPA when it's on sale for 20 bucks a gallon (regular price is 30) so that's about 75 bucks per change as I do it myself. Pretty darn cheap insurance (if their is such a thing) for engine maintenance. I also change ALL the other fluids in my truck at 50,000 mile intervals and use either Royal Purple synthetic or Amsoil in trans (6sp) transfer case and both front and rear diffs (Dana 60 and 80) That's a couple hundred. My truck is 18 years old, I bought it new and it will more than likely outlive me. I'm 73. Only vehicle I've ever owned for more than 4 years. I like it. I've never used Pennzoil in any of my vehicles.

"Back in the day" when we ran muscle car big V-8's we used a lot of Valvoline 20-50 racing oil... :D Hey, how did I end up on Car and Driver forum???

2017 Buick Envision with a small broken part inside the HVAC case that controls the temperature to the rear passengers. Requires replacement of half of the HVAC case. Enjoy.

The more I see of new reliability the more I miss breaker points . I know you can't get 20 mpg out of 69 Charger and have 400 hp on tap but there's just something magical about having an ignition problem and it being someplace between the coil and sparkplug and not in the valve train .

We drove an Expedition for 3 years with no heat because to get to the last 3 screws you have to pull the front seats , console , drop the column and pull the dash . $900 to R&R a $40 heater core . I don't begrudge the shop guys I just hate the engineering .

2018 Tahoe had a mouse chew through the cabin filter and fell into the blower motor while it was running on a high speed. Motor greased the rodent and slung remains throughout the inside of the case. Insurance paid 17.0 hours. I started Friday morning around 9:00 and finished Friday at 5:02 PM.
