Bedding Model 53 Action

Post by Steve »

My Bolt action 30-06 was throwing some wild shots. I found the barrel was very close in one spot. It looks like the action is settling into the wood. I ordered a "Miles Gilbert Bedrock Glass Bedding Kit" from Midway, it should be here tomorrow. Get the action setting properly then float the barrel and it should be shooting straight again.

In the past I had put some copper shims under the action on this rifle and floated the barrel. That held up for quite a few years, but now I have to do it right. I really like this stock so I want to save it. I refinished the stock not long after getting the rifle in the early seventies. It looks good and fits well.

The film I watched on using this compound looked easy enough to me. I have done some pretty complicated wood projects for models so this really looks kind of basic. I will follow up with pictures of the project.

It was Made by Winchester for Sears Roebuck & Co sold as Model 53. Mine is 30-06. It is basically a win model 70. I had to replace the triger guard, ordered one for a Win 70, bolted right on. Scope bases are for Win 70.

The bolt on this rifle is so smooooth. It's just a pleasure to shoot this rifle. When I got it, it kicked so hard after 20 heavy rounds my shoulder hurt so bad I couldn't hit anything because of flinshing. I had the best recoil pad Packmyer made put on it and it works so well I can shoot anything in it without it hurting, makes it a lot of fun. Just looked up the paperwork, bought it new in July of 71 for 150 dollars. Got a couple of boxes of ammo woth it, have a few of the fired cases. They are head stamped "SEARS 30-06"

Don't under estamate the addition of pillars (a solid insert at the action screws) they will eliminate any shrink swell action flexing caused by the screw tension changing from , in my case leaving the 7-17% humidity desert and going to the 70% south hog hunting.

Good looking rifle.

I was eyeballing some pillar's That is what is in one of the Hogue stocks I put on a Rem 700. Really works good in it.

Thought I would put the bedding in first and get stuff all square with the world, then put in the pillars. Am I thinking wrong? Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I am used to making at least one mistake per day.

I have 1 done by a top shelf professional w/10K plus in tooling machines he put in 5/8'' posts w/fresh bedding around the 1/4'' screws. I had a BRNO Mauser w/3/8 (probably metric) posts . Those were probably follow drilled and pressed into the stock. So long as you have a hard bottom between the action, posts and bottom metal and it is seated tight, its pretty much users choice for the posts .
