35/30 (2)

Post by todddoyka »

howdy!

this is my first post, but i am a long time reloader. i do go to other forums. i am also on a limited income. :( i have been looking at ranch dog's own discussion, so i figure i better do my own post so i don't confuse his.

i have been thinking(for months) about my m94 in 30-30 and sending it to JES to make it a 35/30. although it will be 4-5 months before i get the money, i have a few questions.

it will be my "truck" gun. i can use it to shoot targets, soda cans, deer and black bear.

range and boolit weight?
i would like a 250 - 280gr boolit will do 1600-1800fps to go approx. 150 yards. in all reality, it will only go about 50 yards, but 150 yards should be nice to do.

rifle twist?
i think that 1 in 16" twist will be alright, but will it do 250 - 280gr boolit weight? i kinda like my boolits to be heavier.

smokeless powder
i have h4198, rel 7 and h322. i would like to use them on boolits that weigh 250 - 280gr. should that be good? i have tried to find it, but other than frank barnes, cartridges of the world, i haven't had luck. do you have any 250-280gr loads?

oh, and the sights will be williams peep sights(https://www.midwayusa.com/product/71288 ... inum-black and https://www.midwayusa.com/product/38434 ... teel-black ).

thank you for reading my post!

I think if you want your rifle to chunk 250+ projectiles you should have JES rechamber/rebore your M94 to 38-55 Win. That weight range is beyond the possibilities of the 35-30. You also mentioned that you have a limited income, the dies for the 35-30 are about three times that of Lee's 38-55 Win dies plus case trimmers and a Factory Crimp Die if you want those items are three times the cost of the 38-55 Win. You would need to buy brass, but Starline is relatively inexpensive.

I had JES rebore/rechamber a Rossi Rio Grande 30-30 Win to 38-55 Win, but I had him use the 375 Win bore and Groove of .366"/.376" vs. that of the 38-55 Win's .373"/.376". This makes it easier to find jacketed bullets if you want to shoot them. With cast bullets, you don't have some issues that the case bludge creates with the additional diameter needed for a true 38-55. I do use standard length Starline 38-55 Win brass. I had JES use the standard 1:18 for this cartridge, that's a good twist for chunking the pumpkin.

That's my advice having the 30-30 Win, 35-30, and 38-55 Win. I also have a 375 Win but would stick with the 38-55 over it.

you're probably right. i think i'll take it to 38-55. i believe the m94 has a 20"barrel (1973 i think, win m94), i'll have to check it.

i do like starline. i buy my brass in 44 sp and 500L from them. i was checking how much will it cost 35/30 die and i found that ch4d has dies that is $90+/-. its about the same price as my 500L in hornady dies.

i was going to buy a 27" MGM heavy factory barrel(peep sight) in 38-55 for my tc encore, but that has waited for so long that i have a hard time remembering it.

i'm leaning towards a Lyman 375449(275gr fn gc) but i'm all ears!!!
