Nosler Custom Competition (graphic)

Post by 357cyrus »

Thought I'd share this for anyone wanting to try Nosler's Custom Competition bullets. This was the 69 grain version with cannelure I bought as "factory 2nds" (cosmetic blems) from shootersproshop.com , and is the most accurate load I have. 5 shots from 100yrd can be covered with a penny when shot from sandbags. Rifle is a Remington SPS Tactical w/ heavy 20" barrel. No modifications in any way.

The handload is with H322. While I couldn't find any published data for a .223 bolt gun, 69 grain bullet, and 20" barrel, (both more standard to 5.56 ARs) tinkering with QuickLoad shows my charge is about 85% of maximum pressure as it leaves the muzzle @ 2750 fps.

Nosler does not recommended this target bullet for hunting. Unfortunately, my V-Max slinging 22 magnum was out of commission, and I had a whistle pig chowing down on soy behind my house. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Distance was about 115-130 yards. Impact velocity, around 2400fps. Bullet enters/exits its left bicep with little damage, enters the chest cavity, and exits right shoulder. Pretty darned devastating, as he didn't have time to spit out his lunch. The exit wound was about the size of a golfball. I won't hesitate to use them on coyotes and smaller in the future.
