223 with auto drum

Post by Holsterguy »

Setting up to do a run of 223 on my classic turret. Which charging die do you guys use? Long or short? Since 223 is right at the change over for length. Using the auto drum.
Thanks in advance!

I have used both and prefer the long one.

My LCT 5.56 set up has an Autodisk Pro. I do have an Autodrum but it's unused, I think it's on my 45ACP turret.

I believe Lee Precision recommends the short charging die. It works with cases from .860 to 1.760 inches long. Since SAAMI is 1.740 to 1.760 for .223 case length, the short charging die is recommended. Now if your cases are all trimmed to 1.760 and you want to use the long charging die you certainly could. Although you may have a problem trying to do so with the autodrum, which is case-activated. If your cases are trimmed to 1.750, it may not allow the autodrum to fully actuate. I think most reloaders trim to 1.750, but I do know some that go to 1.740 or close; so they hopefully don't have to trim again for the life of the case.
