Up Close Encounters
Good morning
Each Tuesday I head up the mountains to a valley 56 miles away up and over two ranges. Highest I get is just short of 11,000. I do this on a Kawasaki KDX so it is for me a great day to 2 wheel. Generally I get to see all sorts of critters that do not populate places like ILLinois. Down here it is dry high desert.
So yesterday I am starting down from high point. I was on a south facing leg of the 2 lane road getting ready for a mild curve to the left to enter a flat area. Just as I start my curve I saw an eagle flying about head high that was coming north turn to the east also just in front of me. So instantly there was a 4 foot wing spread black and white eagle flying directly in front of me just cruising along with no care in the world. After 6 wing beats the eagle started looking to the left and then noticed me on the Kaw. The eagle bent his head far to the left rear, got a good look at the strange item right close and did the very instant left peel off flying away to my left rear. Amazing how fast wild life react.
When I return home in the late afternoon my wife usually asks me what critters I saw up there. Yesterday I replied " I had wonderful close up of eagle rump".

Re: Up Close Encounters
I once had a small hawk in front of my car on a narrow forest road for a few seconds. That's really beautiful to see these birds in mid flight.

Re: Up Close Encounters
Greetings My first time to get that close for that long . Have had eagles cross the road in front of me but never real close. A few have been following air currects that are hillside affected but again not real close.akuser47 wrote:That is cool moments like that rare. Is that a rare event or normal?
This moment was just one of those neat blessings we get to enjoy from time to time out in the open areas.

Re: Up Close Encounters
Yet another reason to wear a helmet.... eagle poo. On a serious note, that must have been quite a show. They are impressive to say the least. Size, power, grace, and agility all in one bird. I saw a bald eagle cruising to withing about 40 yards of me like you mentioned, with those huge, slow wing strokes. He just kept right on going, and I was like...
